I'm LOVING this heatwave, aren't you?? Nothing nicer than a mint Magnum in one hand, an ice cold Irn bru in the other, and the sounds of Katrina and the Waves singing 'Walking on Sunshine' on the radio for the 20495th time this week.
While the naturally beautiful among us are ready to slick on some sunblock, grab the Prada sunglasses and their Sony E-Reader before they get down to some serious sunbathing, a few others need a little extra grooming in order to look 'naturally' beautiful on the beach. Or maybe you're an active kinda gal, who needs to look her best safe in the knowledge that her mascara won't smudge while she surfs. So with this in mind, I thought I'd tell you about simple, effect and budge-proof beauty for when the heat is on.
First of all, let's help mother nature a little bit by warming up your natural skin tone with a really good self tan for the face. I've been a fan of Lancome's self tanning range for years now, and the Flash Bronzer Custom Colour Tinted Self Tan for the Face imparts a fantastically natural, glowing tan. I like to use it as part of my night time routine, on top of a light serum or night cream. That way I wake up looking like I've had a week at Chiva Som, and not 24 hours in Saltcoats. £21.50.
Now, for the eyes. A well kept secret is Clinique Touch Base for Eyes. Fantastic for sensitive eyes, this cream base comes in 2 colours - canvas ( a light beige) and canvas light ( shimmer beige) - and can either be used alone or as a base for your favourite eyeshadow. The genius of this product is that once it's in place, it doesn't smear, fade or crease, and a friend of mine uses this everyday under eyeshadows and never has to touch up her eye make up - even after working out in the gym and swimming. Love it. £10.00.
If you want to define your eyes, then you can't go wrong with the FABULOUS Liquid Last Liner from MAC. Once you master the slightly fiddly applicator brush and thick texture of this eyeliner, you will be amazed at its staying power. This intensely pigmented liquid looks freshly applied from dawn to dusk, and my testers have been delighted that it doesn't slide or smudge under the eyes even in this heat. The main problem you may have is actually getting it off at the end of the day - it really does stay put. But I find an oil based eye make up remover like Clinique's Take the Day Off does the job nicely. A pencil alternative is MAC's Powerpoint Eye Pencil - comes in a myriad of colours, is waterproof and is easy to apply. Liquid Last is £13.50, Take the Day Off is £14.00 and Powerpoint is £12.50.
I've been a fan of Benefit's Bad Gal mascara for a while now, and I was delighted when they brought out a waterproof version. I've recommended this to many a bride and for those who love a good weepy movie - it's totally tearproof! A longer wearing option is - deep breath - Jemma Kidd Make Up School's Semi Permanent Lasting Tint Waterproof Lash Colour....phew, now there's a name! Applied in the same way you would a regular mascara, this lash tint will give you around 24 hours of naturally enhanced lashes and again, won't shift once it's in place. Ideal for beach babes. Bad Gal is £14.50. Jemma Kidd is £13.00
For cheeks and lips, I love love LOVE Daniel Sandler's Watercolour in Lover. It's creamy consistency belies its staying power, and it blends to a beautiful, glowing sheen. I adore the deep golden pink hues of Lover as it's perfect on lips and cheeks, but all the colours in the range are sheer, blendable and long lasting, so you really can't go wrong. My other favourite blush 'n' lip stain is by Vie (formally Virgin Vie) Watercolour Blush. Although it shares the same name as the Daniel Sandler product, the consistency is more watery, and as a result is more sheer, meaning you can build up the colour if you need to. It's foolproof to apply, as it comes in a bottle with a brush applicator. I'd use 3 dots on the cheeks to give a natural glow, and you'll be delighted with the results. Daniel Sandler is £11.00, Vie is £9.50.
By using my favourite summer-proof products to create your look for a day on the beach, you'll be sure to leave the others in the shade.
See you at the seaside!
